Traffic changes and overnight work are expected to begin Thursday night on I-65 near downtown and southeast Indianapolis as part of the I-65 Safety and Efficiency project. Crews will install pavement markings and shift traffic.
Drivers should note the adjusted schedule below. Work will begin with overnight closures Thursday, March 19, followed by longer-term restrictions.
Thursday, March 19 (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.)
- Ramp from eastbound I-70 to northbound I-65 reduced to one lane
- Northbound and southbound I-65 reduced to one lane between Washington Street and the I-65/I-70 interchange south of downtown
- Southbound I-65/I-70 collector distributor closed between Washington Street and Fletcher Avenue
Ongoing Ramp Closures
Two ramp closures are scheduled to begin around 9 p.m. Thursday, March 19 and reopen late this fall:
- Ramp from Calvary Street to northbound I-65 closed
- Ramp from Washington Street to southbound I-65 closed
Ongoing Lane Restrictions
Lane restrictions will be in place on or after Friday, March 20 on I-65/I-70 between New York Street and the I-65/I-70 interchange south of downtown:
- Northbound I-65 reduced to three lanes
- Southbound I-65 reduced to two lanes
- Southbound I-65/I-70 collector distributor reduced to one lane between Washington Street on-ramp and Fletcher Avenue off-ramp
Lane restrictions are expected to continue this spring/summer as crews replace pavement on I-65/I-70 in the area.

Monday, March 23 (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.)
- Raymond Street entrance ramps to southbound I-65 closed
- Ramp from southbound I-65 to Keystone Avenue closed
- Southbound I-65 reduced to one lane between Raymond Street and Keystone Avenue
Tuesday, March 24 (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.)
- Ramp from eastbound I-70 to southbound I-65 closed (beginning at midnight)
- Raymond Street ramps to and from southbound I-65 closed
- Ramp from Morris and Prospect streets to southbound I-65 closed
- Southbound I-65 reduced to one lane between the I-65/I-70 interchange south of downtown and Raymond Street
Drivers should plan ahead and consider alternate routes to avoid delays.
All restrictions are weather dependent. Actual dates and anticipated work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances occur.
Construction Speed Limit
The construction zone speed limit remains active on I-65. A reduced speed of 45 mph is in place for the duration of I-65 Safety and Efficiency work. It is important for drivers to slow down and avoid distractions in work zones.
