Contract awarded for I-65 Safety and Efficiency

Construction is expected to begin this spring

Indianapolis, IN (March 25, 2025)The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has awarded a contract to Milestone Contractors, L.P. to construct the I-65 Safety and Efficiency project.

I-65 Safety and Efficiency will reduce congestion and improve safety on the southeast side of Indianapolis. The five-mile project corridor stretches from north of the I-465 interchange to just south of the I-65/I-70 overpass.

The contract letting includes:

  • I-65 Safety and Efficiency Corridor Improvements (Des. No. 1400073)
  • I-65/I-70 Pavement Replacement (Des. No. 1901498)
  • Abandoned Railroad Bridge Removal (Des. No. 2101625)

The project includes added capacity, pavement patching and resurfacing, as well as bridge, sidewalk, and drainage improvements. Pavement will be replaced on the north end of the corridor, from just north of the Fletcher Avenue overpass to just south of the I-65/I-70 overpass, and an abandoned railroad bridge will be removed just north of Fletcher Avenue over I-65/I-70.

Added capacity includes an additional travel lane in each direction from I-465 to I-70, creating four lanes in each direction when construction is complete. Most of the widening utilizes the existing inside shoulder, while the southern third of the project’s widening will occur to the outside.

Bridge improvements include a new overpass at Hanna Avenue, a rehabilitated northbound I-65 bridge over Morris/Prospect streets, a rehabilitated Morris/Prospect bridge over I-65, and widened northbound bridges at Naomi Street, Pleasant Run, and Morris/Prospect streets. Pavement overlay work will extend the life of 18 other bridges throughout the corridor.

Construction is expected to begin in late spring and is scheduled to last two years.
