Pavement replacement on southbound I-65 in downtown Indianapolis is progressing, and I-65 Safety and Efficiency crews are preparing to reopen the roadway to three lanes between Michigan and Ohio streets late this week.
After the traffic shift, pavement will be replaced on the adjacent southbound I-65/I-70 collector-distributor road, which is closing south of Ohio Street along with the exit to Fletcher Avenue. The collector-distributor is the outside lane used by drivers entering and exiting the interstate.
Drivers are expected to see the following changes in place for their morning commutes on Friday, Sept. 25:
- Southbound I-65 open to three lanes between Michigan Street and Ohio Street
- Adjacent southbound I-65/I-70 collector-distributor closed south of Ohio Street
- Exit to Fletcher Avenue closed
- Exits to Michigan and Ohio Streets remain open
- Access westbound I-70 by continuing south on I-65

Advanced signage will be in place. The new traffic pattern is expected to remain in place through late this year.
Overnight Closures this Week
Overnight closures are needed this week to prepare for the traffic switch and for continued pavement replacement work on northbound I-65.
Wednesday, Sept. 23 and Thursday, Sept. 24
- One lane closed on southbound I-65 between Washington Street and Fletcher Avenue
- Collector-distributor closed south of Ohio Street
Friday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 26
- Northbound I-65 reduced to two lanes between Fletcher and Washington Street
- Ramp from northbound I-65 to Washington Street closed
Closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
All work is weather dependent. Actual dates and anticipated work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances occur.
Construction Speed Limit Active
The construction zone speed limit remains active on I-65. A reduced speed of 45 mph is in place for the duration of I-65 Safety and Efficiency work. It is important for drivers to slow down and avoid distractions in work zones.
