I-65 Safety and Efficiency Quarterly Snapshot

Construction started in April, and progress is already visible on the I-65 Safety and Efficiency project in southeast Indianapolis.

Bridge work has been front and center this year, and it has been out with the old and in with the new at Hanna Avenue over I-65. The old bridge was demolished earlier this year and work on a new bridge is well underway. It is expected to open to traffic later this year. Crews also set new beams on the northbound I-65 bridge over Morris and Prospect streets, where rehabilitation work is in progress with a new deck and beams.

Bridges are a portion of the progress happening along the corridor. This summer brought several improvements with drainage work, new signage, ramp reconstruction and new inside lanes on I-65.

Take a look at some of the key milestones along the corridor this summer:

The majority of corridor-wide drainage improvements were completed through a series of weekend directional closures.

The exit ramp from northbound I-65 to Keystone Avenue was reconstructed and reopened to traffic ahead of schedule.

Crews are already paving new inside lanes on I-65 as part of this year’s work to add capacity. Most of the widening uses the existing inside shoulder, with the southern third of the project widening to the outside.

Next year, construction will shift to the outside lanes of I-65. When the project is complete, I-65 will expand to four lanes in each direction between I-465 and I-70.

I-65 is currently reduced to two lanes in each direction between I-465 and I-70. Restrictions will remain in place through late 2026.

Drivers should also note that the construction zone speed limit is 45 mph. The reduced speed will remain in place for the duration of the project. Please slow down and stay alert in work zones.
