Construction is underway along the I-65 Safety and Efficiency corridor, and drivers are seeing lane closures and restrictions in place. Starting this weekend, drivers should expect a series of weekend, directional lane closures on I-65 in southeast Indianapolis.
The closures extend from the I-65/I-465 interchange to the I-65/I-70 interchange and include all entrance ramps to I-65 which include Keystone Avenue, Raymond Street, Morris/Prospect Street, and I-70. During closures on southbound I-65, the ramp from Madison Avenue to eastbound I-70 will also close. Traffic will be detoured using I-465 and I-70.
Closures are scheduled for 9 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday. June weekend closures are planned as follows:
I-65 Southbound Closure
- Friday, June 20 through Monday, June 23
I-65 Northbound Closure
- Friday, June 27 through Monday June 30
Hanna Avenue Bridge Replacement
The Hanna Avenue bridge over I-65 closed earlier this week for replacement. Some construction activities, like demolition and beam setting, may require temporary restrictions on I-65. The new bridge is expected to open late this fall. It will include a six-foot sidewalk on the north side and a 10-foot shared-use path on the south side to support future pedestrian access.
The IndyGo bus route is detoured around the Hanna Avenue bridge closure. Riders can find updated route information here.
This year, most construction activity is focused on adding capacity using inside lanes of I-65. Early work includes utility relocation and drainage improvements, and crews have already started pouring concrete for new pavement.
Next year, the focus will shift to the outside lanes of I-65. When the project is complete, I-65 will expand to four lanes in each direction between I-465 and I-70.
I-65 is reduced to two lanes in each direction between I-465 and I-70. Restrictions will remain in place through late 2026.
Drivers should also note:
- The construction zone speed limit is 45 mph. The reduced speed will remain in place for the duration of the project. Please slow down and stay alert in work zones.
- The ramp from northbound I-65 to Keystone Avenue (Exit 107) is closed for reconstruction and is expected to reopen in August.
Traffic information and an Interactive Map can be found at I65SafetyandEfficiency.com. While there, be sure to sign up for project updates by email or text.
The map includes clickable hotspots along the I-65 corridor that show planned improvements, long-term closures, and construction updates for each location. Each hotspot includes a description of the work, photos of the area, and closure information. The map will be updated with new photos and information as construction progresses.
