New Hanna Avenue bridge to open

The new Hanna Avenue bridge over I-65 is expected to open by the evening of Monday, Nov. 17, on the southeast side of Indianapolis.

The new bridge includes a six-foot sidewalk on the north side of the bridge and a 10-foot shared-use path on the south side to accommodate a future pedestrian pathway. The old bridge closed in June for replacement.

Crews have made significant corridor-wide progress since work began in April including drainage improvements, new signage, and ramp reconstruction. Construction will continue through the winter with work that can be completed in colder weather, such as bridge improvements and demolition activities.

What’s Ahead

The majority of the new inside lanes on I-65 are complete. Once traffic is shifted onto the new inside lanes, work will begin on the outside lanes. Two lanes of I-65 will remain open in both directions a majority of the time through 2026.

An abandoned railroad bridge north of Fletcher Avenue over I-65 and I-70 is expected to be removed next year. That work is expected to begin in the spring and continue through fall 2026. Pavement replacement on I-65 and I-70 between the North and South Split is also scheduled to begin in the spring and continue through next year.
