Overnight lane restrictions on I-65 for Hanna Avenue bridge demolition

Indianapolis, Ind. (June 30, 2025) – Overnight lane restrictions are planned this week on I-65 in southeast Indianapolis as crews begin demolition of the Hanna Avenue bridge, which closed for replacement earlier this month.

Southbound I-65 is scheduled to be reduced to one lane between I-465 and Keystone Avenue from Monday, June 30, to Wednesday, July 2. Closures are planned between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night.

Starting at midnight each night, drivers should expect intermittent stoppages of up to 20 minutes at a time while crews safely remove portions of the bridge over the interstate.

The new bridge is expected to open late this year and will include a six-foot sidewalk on the north side and a 10-foot shared-use path on the south side to accommodate a future pedestrian trail.

The IndyGo bus route is detoured around the bridge closure. Riders can find updated route information here.

Actual dates and anticipated work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances occur. Drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time, when possible.

Weekend Closures on I-65

No directional closures are planned on I-65 this weekend due to the Fourth of July holiday. Planned closures will allow crews to complete drainage improvements beneath the roadway.

July weekend closures are planned as follows:

I-65 Northbound Closures

  • Friday, July 11 through Monday, July 14
  • Friday, July 18 through Monday, July 21
  • Friday, July 25 through Monday, July 28

Closures are scheduled for 9 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday and extend from the I-65/I-465 interchange to the I-65/I-70 interchange. Entrance ramps to I-65 will also be closed, including Keystone Avenue, Raymond Street, Morris/Prospect Street, and I-70. Traffic will be detoured using I-465 and I-70.

Construction Speed Limit
The construction zone speed limit remains active on I-65. A reduced speed of 45 mph is in place for the duration of I-65 Safety and Efficiency work. It is important for drivers to slow down and avoid distractions in work zones.
