Southbound I-65 lane closures begin this week

Indianapolis, IN (May 19, 2025) – Crews continue preparing for new traffic patterns on the I-65 Safety and Efficiency corridor in southeast Indianapolis. Southbound I-65 lane reductions are scheduled to begin this week. The new patterns will allow crews to build new lanes using the inside shoulder this year.

Southbound I-65 will gradually be reduced to two lanes between I-465 and the I-70 overpass, with lane restrictions moving south as the week progresses:

  • On or after Tuesday, May 21: Reduced to two lanes between the I-65/I-70 interchange and Raymond Street
  • On or after Wednesday, May 22: Reduced to two lanes between Raymond Street and Keystone Avenue
  • On or after Thursday, May 23: Reduced to two lanes between Keystone Avenue and the I-465 interchange

The following overnight lane and ramp closures are scheduled for crews to install pavement markings for new traffic patterns, weather permitting:

Monday, May 19 | 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • I-65 southbound reduced to one lane between Shelby Street and Nelson Avenue
  • Ramp from I-70 eastbound to I-65 southbound reduced to one lane

Tuesday, May 20 | 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • I-65 southbound reduced to one lane between Shelby Street and Nelson Avenue

Wednesday, May 21 | 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • I-65 southbound reduced to one left lane between Nelson Avenue and Keystone Avenue

Thursday, May 22 | 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • Ramp from southbound I-65 to eastbound and westbound I-465 reduced to one lane
  • I-65 southbound reduced to one lane between Keystone Avenue and I-465

Actual dates and anticipated work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances occur. Drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time, when possible.

As a reminder, the ramp from northbound I-65 to Keystone Avenue (Exit 107) closed for reconstruction over the weekend and will remain closed through late August.

Northbound I-65 was also reduced to two lanes between I-465 and the I-70 overpass. Lane restrictions are expected to remain in place through late 2026 as crews construct additional travel lanes as part of the I-65 Safety and Efficiency project. Interstate 65 will expand to four travel lanes in each direction between I-465 and I-70 at the end of the project.

Several ramps at the I-65/I-70 and I-465 interchanges will be limited to one travel lane to accommodate I-65 construction. Some ramp restrictions are already in place, with others expected to begin by the end of May. These lane closures will remain in place through the end of 2025.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time, and be aware of changing traffic patterns. Follow posted signs and pavement markings to navigate the corridor safely.

I-65 Safety and Efficiency will extend the life of existing pavement and add capacity to improve traffic flow and safety in southeast Indianapolis. Construction Speed Limit Now Active
The construction zone speed limit is now active on I-65. A reduced speed of 45 mph is in place for the duration of I-65 Safety and Efficiency work. It is important for drivers to slow down and avoid distractions in work zones.
